Aluminium Sheets — Overview

An aluminium sheet is flat-rolled aluminium between 0.20 mm and 6 mm thick. Below that range the material is classed as foil; above it, as plate. Sheets are the most widely used form of aluminium in India because they combine low weight with genuine structural usefulness — roughly one-third the weight of steel, naturally corrosion-resistant through a self-forming oxide layer, and easy to cut, bend, punch, weld and anodise.

Kumar Aluminium supplies aluminium sheets across the 1000, 3000, 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 series to fabricators, contractors, OEMs and traders in Mumbai and across India. Because we hold stock from eleven mills at one counter, you can compare a Hindalco 5052-H32 against an imported 5083-H111 without calling three different suppliers.

Aluminium Sheet Grades & Tempers We Stock

Grade determines strength, formability, weldability and corrosion behaviour. Temper — the letter-number suffix such as H14 or T6 — describes how the sheet was hardened. Below are the grades we hold in regular stock, grouped by alloy series.

1000 series — commercially pure aluminium

99.5% Pure

Highest formability and conductivity in our range. Soft, easy to deep-draw, excellent corrosion resistance. Not for load-bearing work.

99.6% Pure

Slightly purer than 1050 with marginally better conductivity. Used where electrical or thermal performance matters more than strength.

99.5% Pure

Highest formability and conductivity in our range. Soft, easy to deep-draw, excellent corrosion resistance. Not for load-bearing work.

99.6% Pure

Slightly purer than 1050 with marginally better conductivity. Used where electrical or thermal performance matters more than strength.

3000 series — manganese alloys

Al-Mn

About 20% stronger than 1100 while keeping good formability. The most common roofing and ducting sheet in India.

Al-Mn-Mg

Slightly stronger than 3003 with a good surface for coating. Widely used for chequered plate and pre-painted sheet.

5000 series — magnesium alloys (marine grades)

Al-Mg

Good weldability and corrosion resistance with better strength than 5052 in welded joints. Common in transport and flooring.

Marine Grade

Sits between 5052 and 5083 in strength, with excellent resistance to saltwater and industrial atmospheres.

Al-Mg

The best all-round balance of strength, formability and saltwater resistance. The standard marine and pressure-vessel sheet.

High-Mg Marine

The strongest non-heat-treatable alloy we stock. Retains toughness at very low temperatures and resists seawater exceptionally well.

6000 series — heat-treatable structural alloys

Structural

The most versatile structural alloy. Machines cleanly, welds well and takes anodising. The default for load-bearing machined parts.

High-Strength Structural

The strongest 6000-series alloy, popular in European engineering standards. Excellent machinability in T651 temper.

6000 series — heat-treatable structural alloys

Al-Cu

High strength through copper alloying. Requires protective coating in corrosive environments as the copper reduces natural resistance.

Aerospace Al-Cu

Outstanding fatigue resistance and strength-to-weight ratio. The classic aircraft skin and structural alloy.

Highest Strength

The strongest aluminium sheet we stock — comparable to many steels in strength while remaining far lighter. Limited formability.

Al-Fe-Si

Excellent for rolling to thin gauges with a bright, consistent surface. The standard grade for foil stock and thin sheet.

Understanding temper codes

Brand Alloys & Temper Alloys & Temper
F
As fabricated
No controlled hardening — softest condition
H14
Strain hardened, half hard
The most common sheet temper — good balance of strength and bending
H16
Strain hardened, three-quarter hard
Stiffer than H14, less suited to tight bends
H32
Strain hardened and stabilised, quarter hard
Standard for 5052 — stable, formable, corrosion-resistant
H111
Annealed then lightly strain hardened
Used on 5083 and 5754 — good weld strength
H116
Strain hardened, marine corrosion-controlled
Specified for 5086 in saltwater service
T4
Solution heat treated, naturally aged
Moderate strength, better formability than T6
T6
T4Solution heat treated, artificially aged
Peak strength for 6061, 6082, 7075
T651
T6 plus stress relief by stretching
Flat and stable — preferred for machining
