Aluminium Sheets - Overview
An aluminium sheet is flat-rolled aluminium between 0.20 mm and 6 mm thick. Below that range the material is classed as foil; above it, as plate. Sheets are the most widely used form of aluminium in India because they combine low weight with genuine structural usefulness roughly one-third the weight of steel, naturally corrosion-resistant through a self-forming oxide layer, and easy to cut, bend, punch, weld and anodise.
Kumar Aluminium supplies aluminium sheets across the 1000, 3000, 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 series to fabricators, contractors, OEMs and traders in Mumbai and across India. Because we hold stock from eleven mills at one counter, you can compare a Hindalco 5052-H32 against an imported 5083-H111 without calling three different suppliers.
- Why buyers choose aluminium sheet
- Lightweight about one-third the weight of mild steel
- Excellent formability bends, rolls and presses cleanly
- High thermal and electrical conductivity
- Takes anodising, powder coating and PVDF finishes
- Corrosion-resistant without painting or galvanising
- Weldable and machinable across most grades
- Non-magnetic and food-safe in the right grades
- Fully recyclable with no loss of properties

Aluminium Sheet Grades & Tempers We Stock
Grade determines strength, formability, weldability and corrosion behaviour. Temper the letter-number suffix such as H14 or T6 describes how the sheet was hardened. Below are the grades we hold in regular stock, grouped by alloy series
1000 series — commercially pure aluminium
transformer strip
3000 series — manganese alloys
utensils, tanks, insulation jacketing
gutters, coated panels
5000 series - magnesium alloys (marine grades)
better strength than 5052 in welded joints.
Common in transport and flooring.
flooring, food processing equipment
Imported
excellent resistance to saltwater and industrial
atmospheres.
unfired pressure vessels
vessels, truck bodies, electronics
offshore structures, armour panels
6000 series - heat-treatable structural alloys
fixtures, structural frames, transport
machined parts, milled tooling plate
forgings, military applications
parts, high-stress fittings
high-stress structural components
closures, insulation jacketing
Understanding temper codes
| Brand | Alloys & Temper | Alloys & Temper |
|---|---|---|
| F | As fabricated | No controlled hardening – softest condition |
| H14 | Strain hardened, half hard | The most common sheet temper – good balance of strength and bending |
| H16 | Strain hardened, three-quarter hard | Stiffer than H14, less suited to tight bends |
| H32 | Strain hardened and stabilised, quarter hard | Standard for 5052 – stable, formable, corrosion-resistant |
| H111 | Annealed then lightly strain hardened | Used on 5083 and 5754 – good weld strength |
| H116 | Strain hardened, marine corrosion-controlled | Specified for 5086 in saltwater service |
| T4 | Solution heat treated, naturally aged | Moderate strength, better formability than T6 |
| T6 | Solution heat treated, artificially aged | Peak strength for 6061, 6082, 7075 |
| T651 | T6 plus stress relief by stretching | Flat and stable – preferred for machining |
Also stocked: commercial-grade (CG) and mill-designated grades 19000, 31000 and 51300 across Virgo, Inalco, Balco, Master’s India and Kalinga see the brand table below.

Standard Aluminium Sheet Sizes
The most requested size in India is 8 ft × 4 ft (2440 × 1220 mm). We also stock longer and wider formats for cladding and tank work, plus the 1250 × 2500 mm size that most imported material arrives in.
| SIZE (MM) | FEET | COMMONLY USED FOR |
|---|---|---|
| 2440 × 1220 | 8′ × 4′ | General fabrication — the default stock size |
| 2440 × 1000 | 8′ × 1 m | Metric-width panels and cladding |
| 2440 × 915 | 8′ × 3′ | Narrow panels, ducting, partitions |
| 2440 × 1525 | 8′ × 5′ | Wide panels, tank shells, large enclosures |
| 3660 × 1220 | 12′ × 4′ | Long runs — cladding, truck bodies, roofing |
| 1525 × 3050 | 5′ × 10′ | Large-format fabrication, marine panels |
| 1250 × 2500 | Imported standard | Imported 5083, 6061, 6082, 7075 sheet |
Aluminium Sheet Thickness & Gauge Chart
Indian trade still quotes sheet thickness in gauge as often as in millimetres, so here is the conversion our customers ask for most. Aluminium sheet runs from 0.50 mm to 5.00 mm; from 6 mm upward the material is supplied as aluminium plate.
| THICKNESS (MM) | GAUGE | THICKNESS (MM) | GAUGE |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.50 | 25 | 1.50 | 16 |
| 0.65 | 23 | 1.60 | 15 |

How to Choose the Right Aluminium Sheet
Four questions settle most specifications. If you are unsure on any of them, tell us the application and we will suggest a grade rather than leaving you to guess.
- 1. What is the sheet doing?
Decorative or non-structural work is well served by 1050, 1100 or 1200. Mild forming and weathering suits 3003 or 3105. Anything carrying load or facing seawater needs 5052, 5083 or a 6000-series grade.
- 2. Will it be exposed to moisture or chemicals?
For coastal and marine exposure choose the 5000 series 5052 for general work, 5083 or 5086 for direct saltwater contact. Avoid 2000-series alloys outdoors unless they are coated, since their copper content reduces corrosion resistance.
- 3. How much will it be bent or formed?
Softer tempers bend tighter. H14 handles most bending; H16 is stiffer and more likely to crack on sharp radii. T6 tempers are strong but poorly formable machine or fabricate them flat wherever possible.
- 4. Does it need to be welded or machined?
| IF YOU NEED… | CHOOSE |
|---|---|
| General fabrication, signage | 1100-H14 or 8011-H14 |
| Roofing, ducting, cladding | 3003-H14 or 3105-H14 |
| Marine or coastal exposure | 5052-H32, 5083-H111 or 5086-H116 |
| Welded structures | 5754-H111 or 5052-H32 |
| Machined structural parts | 6061-T651 or 6082-T651 |
| Maximum strength | 7075-T651 or 2024-T6 |
| Deep drawing, reflectors | 1050-H14 |
| Anti-skid flooring | Chequered sheet in 3105 or 8011 |
